Are You ready?

Wondering if you're ready to downsize? Well if you're reading this it means you're already thinking about it.
  • Are you spending too much time maintaining your house, putting stuff away? Does it weigh you down?
  • Are you still able to maintain or clean your home or are you too tired to do it anymore or can't afford to do it? Maybe you just want to do something else and be free of that responsibility.
  • Do you have a lot of empty bedrooms that are seldom ever used anymore?
  • Is the house becoming too much of a financial burden and you'd like to do something else with the money, like go on a trip?

The Upside of Downsizing

Freedom from emotional entanglement of stuff.
  • One of the upside of downsizing is to deal with all your stuff that you've accumulated over the years. This can be hard to do and bring anguish but once done, especially if done early enough, little by little, it can be quite liberating. Believe that less is better. As you go through the process, you'll see how too much stuff weighs you down and make you loose precious time and money.
More Money
  • One of the big upside of downsizing is more financial freedom. A smaller home provides some freedom from the expenses and responsibilities of a larger one. Cheaper insurance, utilities, maintenance and mortgage.
More time
  • Once you've downsized and moved into a smaller house, a condominium or a senior residence, you'll have time to to some of the things you've been wanting to do, go out, go on a trip.

What not to do and what  to do

Picture
  • Don't keep items you don't need or don't have space for.
  • Don't pack everything thinking you'll sort when you move to the other place.
  • Don't pay for a storage unit to store what won't fit in the new place.
  • Don't keep things because you think your kids might want them.
  • Don't keep things that you haven't used in 20 year just because you think you might.

  • Start sorting early. Ask yourself each time you evaluate something; “Do I love this enough to clean it, pack it, pay to move it, unpack it and clean it again?”
  • Try to sell everything you won't need or want.
  • Be realistic about what you need. (You don't need the 40 mugs from the kitchen cabinet).
  • Send/give to family members things that you think they want.
  • Ask your kids to pick up their old belongings.
  • Donate what you can't sell.
